Dida, una famosa hembra de elefante conocida por los conservacionistas y turistas como la “Reina de Tsavo”, falleció a la edad de entre 60 y 65 años en Kenia en el parque nacional de Tsavo Oriental, situado entre Nairobi y las llanuras costeras del país africano.
Se trataba de uno de los últimos elefantes gigantes apodados en inglés ‘tusker’ (‘animal colmilludo’). Un paquidermo se considera un ‘tusker’ cuando sus colmillos crecen tanto que rozan el suelo, indica The East African.
Se considera que Dida era la ‘tusker’ (condición muy rara entre las hembras) femenina más grande del continente africano. Aunque los elefantes con colmillos especialmente grandes son el principal objetivo de los cazadores furtivos, la «matriarca» murió por causas naturales, según un comunicado del Servicio de Vida Silvestre de Kenia emitido este martes.
