El Día Mundial de la Alimentación se celebra el 16 de octubre de cada año fue proclamado en 1979 por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO). Su finalidad es concientizar a los pueblos del mundo sobre el problema alimentario mundial y fortalecer la solidaridad en la lucha contra el hambre, la desnutrición y la pobreza. El día coincide con la fecha de la fundación de la FAO en 1945.
La acción colectiva en 150 países es lo que hace del Día Mundial de la Alimentación uno de los días más celebrados del calendario de las Naciones Unidas. Cientos de eventos y actividades de divulgación reúnen a gobiernos, empresas, ONG, medios de comunicación y público en general.
Asimismo, promueven la conciencia y la acción en todo el mundo a favor de quienes padecen hambre y de la necesidad de garantizar dietas saludables para todos.
El Día Mundial de la Alimentación 2021 estará marcado por segunda vez mientras los países de todo el mundo se enfrentan a los efectos generalizados de la pandemia mundial de COVID-19.
