La Fuerza Aérea de EE.UU. ha realizado con éxito la primera prueba completa de su concepto de municiones paletizadas Rapid Dragon.
Utilizando un prototipo de este sistema, un avión de transporte de operaciones especiales MC-130J Commando II lanzó un misil de crucero no especificado que alcanzó un objetivo flotante en el golfo de México, detalla en un comunicado el laboratorio de investigación de la Fuerza Aérea emitido el 16 de diciembre.
«Inmediatamente después del lanzamiento vertical, el FTV [‘Flight test vehicle, es decir, un misil] desplegó sus alas y cola, logró el control aerodinámico, encendió su motor, realizó una maniobra de tracción motorizada y avanzó hacia su nuevo objetivo asignado. El misil de crucero destruyó con éxito su blanco», reza el texto, que no precisa la clase de objetivo naval atacado ni el tipo de proyectil utilizado.
Las Fuerzas Armadas estadounidenses introdujeron en 2016 el concepto de Rapid Dragon, basado en municiones montadas sobre una plataforma que se lanza desde aeronaves de distinto tipo, incluso las de transporte.
Los aviones son cargados con plataformas que albergan paletizados varios misiles de crucero. Una vez lanzadas desde una aeronave que se encuentra a gran distancia de los blancos de ataque, las plataformas liberan un variado kit de proyectiles que se activan y se dirigen hacia sus objetivos .
Las primeras pruebas de lanzamiento de estas plataformas con una carga útil que imitaba misiles de crucero AGM-158 JASSM tuvieron lugar en enero de 2020 desde cargueros C-130 Hercules y C-17 Globenaster.
