Estados Unidos venderá 32 millones de barriles de crudo de cuatro depósitos de sus reservas estratégicas de petróleo, que serán suministrados entre finales de diciembre y abril de 2022, según lo anunció el Departamento de Energía del país norteamericano.
El anuncio responde al plan del presidente Joe Biden, hecho público el pasado martes, de liberar 50 millones de barriles de las reservas nacionales en consonancia con medidas semejantes coordinadas con algunos otros países para «abordar el desajuste entre la demanda y oferta» y reducir los precios mundiales.
Sin embargo, el efecto inmediato de la medida fue contraproducente, ya que los precios de los futuros para las marcas WTI y Brent con suministro en enero experimentaron subidas el miércoles hasta los 79,18 y 82,96 dólares por barril, respectivamente.
Aún con todo, corredores consultados por Reuters esperan que la venta de crudo de las reservas, principalmente una mezcla acídica, o alta en azufre, contenga los precios de los grados acídicos estadounidenses, como Mars y Southern Green Canyon, y beneficie a los clientes asiáticos, que procesan mayoritariamente este tipo de crudo.
La primera subasta incluirá unos 10 millones de barriles de Big Hill y un volumen similar de Bryan Mound en Texas, unos 7 millones de West Hackberry en Luisiana y otros 5 millones de Bayou Choctaw también en Luisiana, precisó el Departamento de Energía en su página web.
Las solicitudes se aceptarán el 6 de diciembre y los contratos se otorgarán a más tardar el 14 de diciembre. Después del 17 de diciembre, el Departamento de Energía anunciará la venta de otros 18 millones de barriles.
