The New York Times publicó un controvertido artículo que aseguraba, citando fuentes anónimas de inteligencia, que el Kremlin había ofrecido una recompensa a combatientes talibanes para que asesinaran a soldados de la coalición encabezada por EE.UU. en Afganistán.
El expresidente americano Donald Trump como los miembros de su Administración y de la comunidad de inteligencia de EE.UU. desmintieron estos informes. Por su parte, la Embajada rusa en EE.UU. calificó de «noticia falsa» y de acusación «sin fundamento» el artículo, señalando que los autores de la publicación «obviamente carecen de información sobre la cooperación entre Rusia y EE.UU.» en el proceso de paz afgano.
Sin embargo, Kirby reiteró el compromiso de EE.UU. para retirar sus tropas del país. «Estamos retirando a todo el personal militar estadounidense de Afganistán y lo haremos para principios de septiembre. [Retiraremos a] todos con la excepción de los que se van a necesitar para proteger la misión diplomática en Afganistán», declaró.
Joe Biden, presidente de Estadls Unidos anunció que planea comenzar la retirada de las tropas estadounidenses de Afganistán en mayo y completarla el 11 de septiembre de 2021. La operación estadounidense en ese país ha estado en curso desde octubre de 2001 y se ha convertido en la campaña militar en el extranjero de mayor duración en la historia de EE.UU.
