Un equipo de investigadores israelíes han encontrado el modo de impedir que las células cancerígenas entren al torrente sanguíneo y se propaguen por el cuerpo, informó la Universidad de Bar Ilán.
El cáncer de mama es el más común de todos, en 2020 hubo más de 2.2 millones de casos según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y una de cada doce mujeres lo padece. Además, aproximadamente el 90% de las muertes son resultado de complicaciones causadas por la metástasis.
El estudio publicado en la revista Oncogene y revisado por pares anuncia que un ingrediente activo de una sustancia desarrollada en la Universidad de Bar IIán previene la expansión de cáncer de mama y su acción se ha demostrado en ratones con un 90% de éxito
Según el estudio de la doctora Gil-Henn y del químico Chill, las células de varios tumores sólidos utilizan unas estructuras en forma de pies llamadas invadopodios que degradan el tejido subyacente para entrar en la sangre y formar metástasis en otros órganos.
Estas estructuras protuberantes funcionan como un ariete vikingo, forzando su entrada a través del tejido para ayudar a que las células cancerígenas entren en la sangre y hagan metástasis.
Sin embargo, explican en el comunicado los coautores, los invadopodios solo actúan cuando dos proteínas se unen, y lo importante del descubrimiento de estos los científicos de Bar Ilán es precisamente haber encontrado el péptido que impide esa interacción de las proteínas.
Los investigadores han producido un péptido (cadena de aminoácidos) diseñado para no permitir que las células enfermas se incorporen al torrente sanguíneo impidiéndoles así la propagación por el cuerpo.
