La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) finalizó ayer su 78ª Asamblea General en Madrid, con preocupación por el “retroceso” de la libertad de prensa que registra en los países de las Américas.
En este sentido, recordó que 25 periodistas han sido asesinados en los últimos seis meses, lo que generó que los más de 200 editores de medios mostrasen su “condena e indignación”.
En 2022, México ha sido el país con más víctimas, con 11 homicidios de periodistas y trabajadores de medios desde abril, sin que las autoridades combatan las tragedias. Los otros países donde se registraron asesinatos han sido Colombia (3), Haití (3), Ecuador (2), Honduras (2), Estados Unidos (1), Paraguay (1), Brasil (1) y Chile (1).
Durante la reunión, se entregó el gran Premio Libertad de Prensa de la SIP, en homenaje póstumo, a 20 periodistas asesinados en México durante el último año.
La asamblea ha instado a gobiernos y autoridades a que asignen prioridad a las investigaciones que permitan capturar a los culpables de los asesinatos de periodistas en la región.
Además, ha exhortado a promover medidas que garanticen la protección del personal de prensa, tema que también fue discutido durante las sesiones, en busca de crear mecanismos adicionales y sistemas que contribuyan a fortalecer la seguridad de los integrantes de los medios en condiciones de riesgo.
